Russian opposition blogger Navalny says Voice of America interview with him is fake

The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that whistleblower lawyer, blogger and opposition leader Alexei Navalny has dismissed an interview with him posted on the Voice of America web site on January 31 as a fake.

This is what RIA Novosti reported about the alleged fake interview:

“They [opposition activists] are not fighters, they are bureaucrats from the opposition…they just waste people’s energy,” the VoA article quotes Navalny as saying. Navalny apparently never said those words to the Voice of America.

The Voice of America Russian Service posted on its website that the interview with Alexei Navalny was indeed a fake. The post included an apology to Navalny. The VOA Russian Service announcement is titled “Interview that wasn’t.” (See below the BBG Watch story.)

The Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), which manages the Voice of America, ended VOA radio and television broadcasts to Russia in 2008 despite protests from VOA journalists and media freedom and human rights groups.

Many experienced VOA Russian Service journalists retired or were pushed out and replaced by contract employees who recently emigrated to the United States and contractors living in Russia. These new employees were charged with producing content for the web but many lacked proper journalistic training and sufficient security clearances.

BBG Watch has been warning that both VOA and Radio Liberty free lance contributors in Russia are exposed to intimidation and manipulation by the Russian secret police. We do not know, however, how exactly the alleged fake interview was created and approved or by whom.

Во вторник 31 января «Русская служба» Голоса Америки опубликовала материал, в котором, как мы считали на тот момент, содержалось интервью с Алексеем Навальным.

На следующий день господин Навальный заявил, что он этого интервью не давал.

«Голос Америки» стремился получить интервью с Алексеем Навальным, чтобы познакомить читателей с разными точками зрения на процессы, происходящие в России. Для получения этого материала мы использовали каналы, которые на тот момент мы считали надежными.

Мы приносим господину Навальному и нашей аудитории искренние извинения.

Русская служба «Голоса Америки» всегда следует надежным методам получения и проверки информации. Однако в эпоху быстро меняющегося медийного ландшафта те методы верификации, которые ранее казались достаточными, сегодня могут оказаться устаревшими.

Мы сделаем надлежащие выводы из этого инцидента, укрепив редакционные стандарты и введя дополнительные меры проверки источников информации.
