Rep. Dana Rohrabacher at 70th Anniversary of Voice of America broadcasting to China
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher at the Capitol Hill reception to mark the 70th anniversary of Voice of America broadcasting to China. The chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Rep. Ileana Ross-Lehtinen, Rep. Chris Smith, Rep. David Rivera, and Rep. Don Young also attended the reception. It was hosted by Congressman Rohrabacher who had introduced an amendment which saved VOA radio and television programs to China from being terminated by the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG), a federal agency which manages VOA. His amendment received wide bipartisan support from members of Congress who accused the BBG of lacking transparency and excercising poor judgement. The BBG also wants to privatize VOA and Radio and TV Marti and to merge Radio Free Asia (RFA), Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), Radio Sawa, and Alhurra TV into a large corporate bureaucracy funded by Congress. Sources tell BBG Watch that these plans are also likely to encounter strong Congressional opposition.
